EXPERIMENTAL DETERMINATION OF MEASUREMENT ERRORS RESULTING FROM AIR GAP VARIATIONS IN RADIOMETRIC DENSITY MEASUREMENT IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE BACK SCATTERING PRINCIPLE

THE RATIONAL APPLICATION OF RADIOMETRIC SURFACE SOUNDING TECHNIQUES TO THE MEASUREMENT OF DENSITY IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION IS GREATLY DEPENDENT UPON THE MAGNITUDES OF THE TOTAL ERRORS ARISING. OF PARTICULAR IMPORTANCE ARE THOSE MEASUREMENT ERRORS, WHICH OCCUR BECAUSE OF THE BACK SCATTERING VARIATIONS BETWEEN THE BASE OF THE PROBE AND THE SURFACE OF THE MEASURING DEVICE. IT IS SHOWN, THAT BY MEANS OF A CAREFUL SELECTION OF THE MEASUREMENT GEOMETRY, A MINIMIZATION OF THESE ERRORS CAN BE ACHIEVED. THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF RADIOMETRIC SURFACE SOUNDINGS APPEARS THEREFORE TO BE WORTH RECOMMENDING FOR ROUGH ROAD SURFACINGS ALSO.
