UNCLASSIFIED AND FARM ROAD CONSTRUCTION AND SOIL STABILIZATION WITH LIME. A CONTRIBUTION TO REGIONAL ROAD BUILDING TECHNOLOGY

THE MOSTLY COHESIVE SOILS IN THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC WITH DIFFERING SILTY AND CLAYEY CONTENTS CANNOT ALWAYS BE CONSIDERED FAVOURABLE FOR ROAD CONSTRUCTION WORK. SPECIAL DIFFICULTIES ARE CREATED WHEN THESE SOILS GET SOAKED. IN ORDER TO UTILIZE SUCH SOILS FOR ROAD CONSTRUCTION PURPOSES THE PROPERTIES OF LIME ARE BEING EXPLOITED. LIME MIXED INTO THE SOIL CAN HELP TO IMPROVE THE CONDITIONS WHICH DEPEND ON THE WATER CONTENT AND THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF SOILS BY WAY OF TRANSFORMING THE SOIL STRUCTURE (GROUND IMPROVEMENT) AND/OR IT CAN HELP TO INCREASE THE BEARING CAPACITY IN A PROCESS OF SOIL STABILIZATION. THE TYPES OF LIME TO BE USED ARE QUOTED. THE UTILIZATION OF LIME IN VARIOUS COUNTRY AREAS ARE DESCRIBED: SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN AND NIEDERSACHSEN WITH MARSHY SOIL, STRONGLY LOAMY AND SANDY LOAM SOILS; MOUNTAINOUS AREAS IN MIDDLE AND SOUTHERN GERMANY WITH DIFFICULT-TO-WORK JURA AND KEUPER SOILS. AT TIMES, CONSTRUCTION PROCESSES ARE QUOTED AND THE QUANTITY OF LIME TO BE MIXED WITH THE RELEVANT TYPE OF SOIL, RESPECTIVELY. THE COSTS TO BE EXPECTED ARE INFLUENCED BY LIME QUANTITIES, THEIR HAULAGE, CONSTRUCTION AND COMPACTION PLANT ETC. THE MINIMUM STRETCH FOR A LIME CONSTRUCTION METHOD SHOULD BE 1000 M. FOR SHORTER DISTANCES PART OF THE WORK CAN BE CARRIED OUT BY SUITABLE AGRICULTURAL EQUIPMENT.
