CONSIDERATIONS REGARDING FROST PROTECTION AND STANDARDIZATION OF PAVEMENTS

BETRACHTUNGEN ZUR FROSTSICHERUNG UND STANDARDISIERUNG VON FAHRBAHNBEFESTIGUNGEN

THE PRESENTLY AVAILABLE NEW DRAFT OF "ADDITIONAL TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS AND GUIDELINES FOR EARTH WORKS IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION (ZTVE-STB)" CONTAIN VARIOUS FROST PROTECTION METHODS WHICH AFFECT THE DIMENSIONING AND STANDARDIZATION OF PAVEMENTS. THE RELATIONS ARE EXPLAINED. FROST PROTECTIONS POSSIBLE ARE: (A) UNBOUND ROAD BASE, COMPACTED TO BEARING CAPACITY; (B) AS FOR A WITH STABILIZED UPPER LAYER; (C) SOIL STABILIZATION; (D) THERMAL INSULATION LAYER; (E) BITUMINOUS HYDRAULICALLY BOUND TOP CONSTRUCTION WITH REINFORCED ROAD BASE. THE MINIMUM THICKNESS OF FROST BLANKETS IS INDEPENDENT OF FROST SENSITIVITY OF SOILS AND HYDROLOGICAL FACTORS. MEASURING METHODS ARE SHOWN. CONSTRUCTION TYPES A, B, C ARE EMPLOYED IN CONJUNCTION WITH STANDARDIZED DESIGNS FOR CONCRETE AND BITUMINOUS PAVEMENTS. D AND E ARE ALTERNATIVES WHICH CAN BE MORE ECONOMICAL IN A PARTICULAR CASE. UNDER DISCUSSION IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE DEFORMATION INDEX E (INDEX V2) OF AT LEAST 1200 KP/CM2 MEASURED ON THE FROST BLANKET AT INTERMEDIATE TO VERY STRONG TRAFFIC FLOW. ON THE BASIS OF THREE MODELS THE FUNCTIONAL AND CONSTRUCTIVE INTERACTION OF THE UPPER CONSTRUCTION AND SUB-SOIL IS MADE CLEAR, AND A UNIFORM BASIC PICTURE FOR THE DIMENSIONING AND STANDARDIZATION OF PAVEMENT DESIGN IS ILLUSTRATED.
