THE CYLINDER TEST DRUM RIG FOR PAVEMENT MATERIALS. ERECTION AND INITIAL TESTS

THE PLANNING OF THE LARGE-SCALE TEST STAND FOR PAVEMENT WEAR TESTS IN THE FEDERAL INSTITUTE FOR HIGHWAYS IN COLOGNE WHICH WAS COMPLETED IN 1973/74 INVOLVED CONSIDERATIONS OF CHOICE OF SYSTEM, THE REQUIREMENTS FOR PAVEMENT SAMPLES AND TEST WHEELS, TEST PROCEDURE AND INSTRUMENTATION. THE RESULT IS A CYLINDER TEST RIG WITH CLIMATE PLANT, WHICH IN PRINCIPLE REPRESENTS AN ENLARGED AND AUGMENTED VERSION OF THE SIMILAR CYLINDER TEST STAND IN KARLSRUHE. IT CONSISTS OF A DRUM OPEN AT ONE END WITH AN INTERNAL DIAMETER OF 3,85 M ROTATING ABOUT A HORIZONTAL AXIS WITH PERIPHERAL SPEEDS OF UP TO 150 KM/H. PAVEMENT SAMPLES ARE AFFIXED TO THE INTERIOR SURFACE IN 12 TRAYS (FRAGMENTS OF BITUMINOUS SURFACING MAY ALSO BE USED). TWO TEST WHEELS WITH INDEPENDENT DRIVE TRAVEL ON THE INTERIOR SURFACE IN THE LOWER PART OF THE DRUM. THE WHEELS ARE MOVABLE IN ALL DIRECTIONS, ARE FITTED WITH SPRING MOUNTINGS AND HAVE PROVISION FOR APPLYING A LOAD NORMAL TO THE ROAD SURFACE. THE CAPABILITIES OF THE EQUIPMENT INCLUDE MEASUREMENT OF WEAR OF ROAD SURFACING AND MARKING MATERIALS, GRIP BETWEEN CAR TYRES AND ROAD SURFACE BOTH LATERALLY AND LONGITUDINALLY DEPENDING ON SLIP AND STEERING ANGLE (CAN ALSO BE USED FOR ROUGHNESS TESTS OF PAVEMENTS), AQUAPLANING, COMPARISON OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF TYRES IN THIS CONNECTION. THE INITIAL MOST URGENT TASK WAS THE INVESTIGATION IN JULY 1974 OF THE WEAR OF ROAD SURFACES UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF WINTER TYRES, DETAILS OF THE TEST PROGRAMMES ARE GIVEN.
