OPTIMAL LAYOUT OF SHORT TUNNELS TO AVOID ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING DURING THE DAY

THE CONSTRUCTION OR RECONSTRUCTION OF MOTORWAYS, CANALS AND MULTILEVEL ROAD JUNCTIONS OFTEN REQUIRES SHORT TUNNELS, WHOSE LENGTH IS LESS THAN THE LIMITING VALUE OF 50 M, FOR WHICH UNDER FAVOURABLE CONDITIONS NO ARTIFICIAL ILLUMINATION IS NECESSARY IN ACCORDANCE WITH PARA 5.2 OF THE DRAFT STANDARD DIN 67524/6.72 "LIGHTING OF ROAD TUNNELS AND UNDERPASSES". TO CLARIFY THE OPTIMUM CONDITIONS, ILLUMINATION TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT ON VARIOUS TUNNEL MODELS TO SCALES OF 1:10 TO 1:17 WHICH WERE PROVIDED WITH AN ARTIFICIAL SKY. THE INFLUENCE OF DIFFERENT REFLECTIVITY OF THE CARRIAGEWAY, THE SIDE WALLS AND CEILING OF THE TUNNEL, THE FORM OF TUNNEL MOUTH AND VARYING WIDTHS AND LENGTHS (UP TO 100 M) OF TUNNEL WAS DETERMINED. GRAPHS RESULTING FROM THE INVESTIGATIONS PERMIT ASSESSMENT OF THE CONSTRUCTIONAL MEASURES WHICH ALLOW THE OMISSION OF ADDITIONAL ARTIFICIAL ILLUMINATION WHILE COMPLYING WITH PRESCRIBED QUALITY STANDARDS FOR THE ILLUMINATION.
