RESEARCH INTO THE PLANNING OF TRAFFIC NETWORKS WITH SPECIAL CONSIDERATION OF PUBLIC PASSENGER TRANSPORT

THE WORK DEALS WITH FUNDAMENTAL INVESTIGATIONS INTO POSSIBILITIES OF USING ELECTRONIC DATA PROCESSING IN THE PLANNING OF TRAFFIC NETWORKS. TO PERMIT THE USE OF DATA PROCESSING FOR THE PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS OF VARIOUS ALTERNATIVE SYSTEMS THE VOLUME OF WORK MUST BE KEPT WITHIN ACCEPTABLE BOUNDS. THIS REQUIREMENT COULD BE MET BY THE CHOICE OF AN APPROPRIATE AREA AND NETWORK MODEL WHICH CONTAINS THE ACTUAL NETWORK AS A SUBSIDIARY SYSTEM OF A PREDETERMINED QUADRATIC GRID WITH DIAGONALS, AND EXPLOITATION OF THE CONSEQUENT POSSIBILITIES OF ROUTE SEEKING AND DIVISION PROCEDURES. THIS LED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF A REDUCTION SYSTEM INVOLVING THE STEPWISE DELETION OF PORTIONS OF THE GRID FROM A PREDETERMINED MAXIMUM NETWORK UNTIL THE APPROPRIATE NETWORK CONDITION IS ACHIEVED. BECAUSE FURTHER INVESTIGATIONS ARE REQUIRED TO ESTABLISH ASSURED CRITERIA FOR THIS PROCESS, IT IS RECOMMENDED INITIALLY TO REMOVE THAT SECTION OF THE NETWORK CARRYING THE LEAST TRAFFIC. A COMPUTER PROGRAMME NEREDU IS PRESENTED, WHICH CARRIES OUT THE NETWORK REDUCTION WITH SIMPLE INPUT PROCEDURES AND A SERIES OF INTERVENTION AND VARIATION POSSIBILITIES. THE MODEL AS DEVELOPED IS SUITABLE FOR AIDING THE PLANNER BY PROVIDING ADDITIONAL DATA AND BASES FOR DECISION MAKING, BECAUSE A LARGE NUMBER OF NETWORK VARIANTS CAN BE ANALYSED WITH RELATIVELY LITTLE EFFORT.
