THE SIGNIFICANCE AND MAGNITUDE OF SPEED VARIATIONS FOR MIXED DISTRIBUTIONS

ZUR BEDEUTUNG UND GROESSE DER GESCHWINDIGKEITSSTREUUNG BEI MISCHVERTEILUNGEN

THE DIFFERING SPEEDS OF PASSENGER AND GOODS VEHICLES HAVE A SIGNIFICANT EFFECT ON THE OCCURRENCE OF ACCIDENTS ON ROADS. ONE DANGER IS TRAVELLING AT SPEEDS MUCH BELOW THE AVERAGE. THE MAGNITUDE OF THE SPEED VARIATION IS OFTEN INFLUENCED BY THE PRESENCE OF DIFFERENT GROUPS OF VEHICLES WITH VARYING SPEED DISTRIBUTIONS. AFTER DISCUSSING THE SIGNIFICANCE OF SPEED VARIATIONS ANALYTICAL SOLUTIONS ARE PRESENTED FOR PREDICTING THE VARIATION OF MIXED DISTRIBUTIONS. ON THE BASIS OF AN EXAMPLE OF MIXED TRAFFIC CONTAINING GOODS VEHICLES (81 KM/H; STANDARD DEVIATION 9 KM/H) AND PASSENGER CARS (105, 115, 125 KM/H; STANDARD DEVIATION 20 KM/H) GENERAL ASSERTIONS ARE DERIVED.
