MEASUREMENTS OF SPEED AND OVERTAKING PROCEDURES ON TWO-LANE CONNECTING RAMPS OF MULTILEVEL MOTORWAY JUNCTIONS

TO ESTABLISH THE CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH THE CONNECTING RAMPS OF MULTILEVEL MOTORWAY JUNCTIONS CAN BE SET OUT HAVING ONLY ONE LANE AND HOW THEY DIFFER FROM THE TWO-LANE LAYOUT AS REGARDS TRAFFIC BEHAVIOUR, MEASUREMENTS WERE CARRIED OUT ON EIGHT RAMPS OF SEVEN JUNCTIONS. THE CONSTRUCTIONAL AND TRAFFIC CHARACTERISTICS ARE SUMMARISED IN A TABLE. THE VEHICLES WERE REGISTERED AT THE BEGINNING AND THE END OF THE RAMPS WITH THE AID OF TUBULAR COUNTERS, CASSETTE RECORDERS AND CHRONOGRAPHS. EVALUATION OF THE RESULTS PRODUCED DISTRIBUTION FUNCTIONS OF SPEED IN RELATION TO MINIMUM RADIUS FOR VARIOUS TRAFFIC COMPOSITIONS AND DEPENDENCE OF OVERTAKING ON THE TRAFFIC DENSITY. THE USE OF SINGLE LANE CROSS SECTIONS SHOULD ONLY BE CONSIDERED IN THE CASE OF VERY LOW TRAFFIC DENSITIES AND FOR RAMPS WHICH ARE TOO SHORT TO ALLOW OVERTAKING ON THE RAMP.
