THE REALISATION OF LONGER SIGHT DISTANCES MADE NECESSARY BY INCREASED SPEEDS OF TRAFFIC CAN BE ACHIEVED BY USE OF AN ALIGNMENT CURVE, BECAUSE THEN A TWO DIMENSIONAL CURVE (ARC SERIES) LIES IN A SINGLE PLANE. BY INTERSECTING A VERTICAL CYLINDER WITH A PLANE, THERE RESULTS AN ELLIPSE IN THE CIRCULAR SECTION OF THE CYLINDER. THE GOVERNING DIMENSIONS MAY BE ASCERTAINED BY GRAPHICAL, MATHEMATICAL AND GRAPHICAL-MATHEMATICAL METHODS. THEY ARE DERIVED FROM A STRAIGHT LINE AND A POINT WHICH DETERMINES THE PLANE. THE FOLLOWING STEPS TO SOLVING THE CURVE ARE PROVIDED: DETERMINE THE ORIGINAL VALUE BY GRAPHICAL DESIGN, LOCATE THE ALIGNMENT OF THE PLANE (POSITION, INCLINATION), VERIFY THE FIRST DESIGN ASSUMPTIONS, SELECT THE HORIZONTAL, CALCULATE THE GRADIENT, CURVE RADIUS, LINK TO EXISTING ROAD ALIGNMENT. AN EXAMPLE MAKES THIS CLEAR. A TEXT BOOK FOR THE APPLICATION OF THE METHOD IS IN PREPARATION.
