CRITERIA FOR USE OF SAND DRAINS IN HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION

THE USES AND MISUSES OF VERTICAL SAND DRAINS, INSTALLED TO ACCELERATE THE RATE OF SETTLEMENT OF A COHESIVE DEPOSIT SUPPORTING A CONSTRUCTION LOAD AND THE RELATED REDUCTION OF THE INDUCED PORE PRESSURES, HAVE CAUSED MUCH CONTROVERSY OVER THE YEARS. ONE OF THE MOST CRITICAL FACTORS INFLUENCING THE EFFICIENCY OF SAND DRAINS IS THE GEOTECHNICAL PROPERTIES OF THE SOIL DEPOSITS AND THE EMPHASIS IS PUT ON THE IMPORTANCE OF CAREFUL AND APPROPRIATE SITE INVESTIGATION. THE NEED FOR ADEQUATE SAMPLING AND TESTING IS STRESSED IN ORDER THAT IMPORTANT, THOUGH PERHAPS SMALL, GEOLOGICAL FEATURES MAY NOT BE OBSCURED, AND THEREBY A FALSE ASSESSMENT OF THE TRUE DRAINAGE BEHAVIOR, PARTICULARLY LATERAL, BE MADE. A SHORT SUMMARY OF THE MOST SALIENT GEOTECHNICAL FEATURES IS GIVEN. A REVIEW OF PRESENTLY AVAILABLE INSTALLATION TECHNIQUES FOR SAND DRAINS IS MADE TOGETHER WITH AN IDENTIFICATION OF THE UNIT COSTS OF INSTALLATION OF THESE METHODS AND AN ASSESSMENT OF THE ECONOMICS OF THEIR USE RELATIVE TO CONSTRUCTION TIMES, STABILITY AND POST CONSTRUCTION SETTLEMENTS IN HIGHWAYS. /AUTHOR/
