THE RELATION BETWEEN THE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF 15 AND 20 CM CONCRETE TEST CUBES

ZUSAMMENHANG DER BETONDRUCKFESTIGKEIT VON WUERFELN MIT 15 UND 20 CM KANTENLAENGE

ACCORDING TO DIN 1048 CONCRETE TESTING, CUBES OF 10, 15, 20 OR 30 CM SHOULD BE USED TO ESTABLISH THE 28-DAY STRENGTH. THE MOST USED, 20 CM CUBES, WHICH WEIGH 18 KG AND REQUIRE A MOULD WHICH WEIGHS 17 KG, ARE CUMBERSOME AND REQUIRE A RELATIVELY LARGE QUANTITY OF CONCRETE. 10 CM TEST SPECIMENS LEAD TO RESULTS HAVING SCATTERS WHICH ARE NOT INSIGNIFICANT, ESPECIALLY WITH CONCRETE HAVING 32 MM LARGEST AGGREGATE SIZE. HENCE 15 CM CUBES ARE RECOMMENDED IN WHICH THE CONCRETE QUANTITY REDUCES FROM 8 TO 3.4 DM3 AND THE MOULD WEIGHT TO 12 KG. SINCE THE CODES GOVERNING CONCRETE TESTING GIVE NO CONVERSION FACTORS, A TOTAL OF 2 X 227 CUBE SERIES OF VARIOUS MIX PROPORTIONS WERE TESTED IN 5 SEPARATE SUPERVISORY TESTING STATIONS.
