TRAFFIC NOISE FORECASTS ON URBAN ROADS

THE ULLRICH AND REMHOLD METHODS HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED FOR CALCULATING THE EQUIVALENT NOISE LEVEL FOR MOTORWAYS AND ROADS WITH FREE-FLOWING TRAFFIC (OVER 60 KM/H). THEY REQUIRE A KNOWLEDGE OF THE AVERAGE HOURLY TRAFFIC VOLUME, THE MEAN SPEEDS OF CARS AND LORRIES, THE PROPORTION OF LORRIES IN THE TRAFFIC AND THE TYPE OF ROAD SURFACE. IN TOWNS THERE IS NO FREE-FLOWING TRAFFIC, THE COMPOSITION OF HEAVY TRAFFIC IS DIFFERENT, AND SPEEDS ARE SIGNIFICANTLY BELOW 60 KM/H. NUMEROUS STUDIES ON TRAFFIC NOISE NUISANCE IN TOWNS WERE AIMED AT ESTABLISHING EXISTING NOISE EMISSION AND PRODUCING NOISE CHARTS, BUT LESS AT FINDING RELATIONS BETWEEN THE TRAFFIC VOLUME ETC AND THE NOISE EMISSION. IT IS THEREFORE NECESSARY TO CARRY OUT CORRESPONDING STUDIES ON URBAN ROADS AND TO DEVELOP A SIMPLE METHOD OF FORECASTING TRAFFIC NOISE EMISSION.
