LIMITS OF APPLICATION OF FOOTPATHS ON TWO-LANED ROADS

EINSATZGRENZEN FUER GEHWEGE AN ZWEISPURIGEN STRASSEN

LIMITS PLACED ON THE ERECTION OF FACILITIES FOR PEDESTRIANS IN THE 1974 RAL-Q SPECIFICATIONS ARE TO BE CHECKED AND AMENDED IF NECESSARY. AN EXAMINATION HAS TO BE MADE OF THE TYPE OF FACILITIES PROVIDED IN GERMANY OUTSIDE BUILT-UP AREAS FOR LARGE AND SMALL PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC VOLUMES AND THE CRITERIA ON WHICH THESE WERE BASED. ACCIDENT STUDIES SHOULD PROVIDE INFORMATION ON THE TYPE AND FREQUENCY OF PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS. IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO FORECAST FUTURE PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC ON NEW ROADS, EFFORTS ARE TO BE MADE TO SEE WHETHER PEDESTRIAN VOLUMES CAN BE ESTIMATED FROM THE SIZE AND POSITION OF TOWNS. IN MANY CASES IT IS POSSIBLE THAT PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC CAN BE GUIDED ONTO PARALLEL LOW COST ROADS, AND OBSERVATIONS OF PEDESTRIAN BEHAVIOUR ARE TO BE MADE TO ESTABLISH UNDER WHICH CONDITIONS THESE ROADS CAN BE TAKEN OVER BY PEDESTRIANS. CHECKS ARE ALSO TO BE MADE TO SEE WHETHER, TOGETHER WITH THE NORMAL DESIGN OF SEPARATE FOOTPATHS, COMPROMISE SOLUTIONS SUCH AS HARDENED VERGES MIGHT BE INTRODUCED.
