THE OBJECT OF THE STUDIES WAS TO ESTABLISH THE EFFECTS OF VERY HEAVY TRACKED VEHICLES ON ROAD PAVEMENTS AND COMPARE THEM WITH STRESSES CAUSED BY NORMAL TRAFFIC, BOTH WITH RESPECT TO EFFECTS IN DEPTH ON THE SUBGRADE AND SUBSOIL AND THE EFFECT ON THE SURFACING. PHOTOELASTIC STUDIES ON MODELS OF DIFFERENT ROAD STRUCTURES ENABLE THE EXTENT OF THE STRESS TO BE COMPARED FOR VARIOUS TYPES OF LOADING AND THE AMOUNT OF STRESS TO BE DETERMINED FOR BOTH STATIC AND DYNAMIC LOADING. THE TESTS EXTENDED TO THE MEASUREMENT OF SETTLEMENTS ON DEFINED ROAD PAVEMENTS, MEASUREMENTS OF HORIZONTAL DEFORMATIONS AT THE TOP OF BITUMINOUS SURFACINGS AND MEASUREMENTS OF ABRASION ON CONCRETE SURFACINGS.
