AN ABSTRACT OF MODIFYING NEGLIGENT DRIVER BEHAVIOR: EVALUATION OF SELECTED DRIVER IMPROVEMENT TECHNIQUES
THIS REPORT GIVES SUMMARY RESULTS OF THE CALIFORNIA DRIVER IMPROVEMENT PROGRAMS. EDUCATIONAL METHODS APPLIED TO DRIVERS INVOLVED IN ACCIDENTS AND HAVING TRAFFIC CONVICTIONS INCLUDE: GROUP EDUCATIONAL MEETINGS (GEM), EXPERIMENTAL INDIVIDUAL HEARING (EIH), REGULAR INDIVIDUAL HEARING (RIH), GROUP ADMINISTRATIVE REVIEW (GAR), AND WARNING LETTER (W/L). COST-BENEFIT ANALYSIS RESULTS INDICATE THAT THE BEST TREATMENT COMBINATION (GEM FOR MALES AND EIH FOR FEMALES) WOULD PRODUCE A NET SAVING OF OVER 3.7 MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR TO THE CALIFORNIA COMMUNITY. GEM APPLIED TO BOTH SEXES PRODUCES A SMALLER SAVING OF ABOUT 3.4 MILLION. THE GREATEST NET SAVING (ABOUT 3.8 MILLION DOLLARS) IS ACHIEVED BY A COMBINATION OF GEM FOR MEN AND GAR FOR WOMEN, BUT THERE IS THE DISADVANTAGE OF LONG DELAYS IN HOLDING SEPARATE MEETINGS FOR WOMEN. /RRL/
