MEASUREMENTS OF TRAFFICABILITY AND TRANSVERSE PROFILE ON AN EXPERIMENTAL ROAD CARRYING HEAVY VEHICLES IN ADELEBSEN

THE EXPERIMENTAL ROAD IN ADELEBSEN WAS LAID FOR CHECKING THE THEORETICAL DATA ON THE BEARING CAPACITY OF CRUSHED STONE ROADBASES AGAINST STANDARD METHODS OF CONSTRUCTION WHERE BITUMINOUS BASES ARE USED. THE ROAD CONSISTS OF THREE SECTIONS, ONE OF WHICH IS BUILT WITH A BITUMINOUS ROADBASE AND ONE WITH A CRUSHED STONE ROADBASE. THE THIRD SECTION CONSISTS OF AN OPTIMISED METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION, THE MAIN ELEMENT OF WHICH IS AN AGGREGATE ROADBASE OF GREATER THICKNESS. THE ECONOMICS OF THIS METHOD WERE SHOWN DURING CONSTRUCTION BY A SAVING IN CONSTRUCTION COSTS OF THREE AND SIX PERCENT COMPARED WITH BOTH THE STANDARD METHODS. RESULTS OF PLATE BEARING TESTS, TRANSVERSE PROFILE MEASUREMENTS, TRAFFICABILITY TESTS AND TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENTS UNDERTAKEN DURING CONSTRUCTION, AFTER OPENING TO TRAFFIC AND DURING CONSTRUCTION OF INDIVIDUAL TEST AREAS ENABLE A PROVISIONAL EVALUATION OF THE METHODS OF CONSTRUCTION TO BE MADE. THIS SHOWS THAT THE VARIED CONSTRUCTION METHOD (3RD SECTION) IS ALMOST AS GOOD AS THE STANDARD METHOD WHICH USES A BITUMINOUS BASE. WHEREAS THE STANDARD METHOD USING AN AGGREGATE BASE IS CONSIDERABLY WORSE THAN BOTH THE OTHER METHODS. IN ORDER TO MAKE THE RESULTS OF THE STUDIES CLEARER, ADDITIONAL TRAFFICABILITY MEASUREMENTS WERE INCLUDED IN THE TEST PROGRAMME AT THE END OF 1974. THESE ARE TO BE CARRIED OUT OVER A LONG PERIOD.
