STUDIES ON THE CONCRETE SURFACING MEASURING SECTION BETWEEN DARMSTADT AND HEIDELBERG

A CONCRETE SURFACING WHICH DIFFERED FROM THE NORMAL METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION IN THAT IT CONTAINED NO EXPANSION JOINTS OR REINFORCEMENT WAS LAID ON THE NEW SECTION OF MOTORWAY BETWEEN ZWINGENBERG AND THE COUNTY BORDER IN 1968. THERE WERE FOUR DIFFERENT TYPES OF ROADBASE AND TWO THICKNESSES OF SURFACING. THE BEHAVIOUR OF THE SURFACING GENERALLY AND UNDER TRAFFIC WAS TO BE DETERMINED. EQUIPMENT NECESSARY FOR THE MEASUREMENTS WAS INCORPORATED IN 1968, AND LATER SYSTEMATIC MEASUREMENTS WERE UNDERTAKEN ON SELECTED SECTIONS 120 M LONG FOR EACH TYPE OF PAVEMENT. THE FOLLOWING MEASUREMENTS WERE MADE: AXLE LOADS, CRACKING, TRAFFICABILITY TEMPERATURES, ARCHING, HORIZONTAL COMPRESSIVE STRESSES, OPENING AND CLOSING OF THE JOINTS, COMPRESSIVE STRESSES IN THE SOIL, CONCRETE STRAINS AND DEFLECTION. STUDY OF THE METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION WITHOUT EXPANSION JOINTS OR REINFORCEMENT RESULTED IN SIMPLIFICATIONS AND A MORE ECONOMICAL CONSTRUCTION METHOD THAN HITHERTO. THE METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION WAS INCORPORATED INTO THE RSTO 75 SPECIFICATIONS. SUPERSEDES IRRD RESEARCH PROJECT NO 39083.
