A NUMBER OF METHODS ARE AVAILABLE FOR TESTING AND EVALUATING A FILLER WITH RESPECT TO ITS SUITABILITY FOR ROAD CONSTRUCTION. THE TESTS REQUIRED IN THE GERMAN SPECIFICATIONS ARE INSUFFICIENT. THERE ARE NO RECOMMENDATIONS CONCERNED WITH THE QUALITY OF A FILLER. HITHERTO, EVALUATION OF THE POTENTIAL OF FILLERS HAS BEEN LEFT TO THE INDIVIDUAL TESTING INSTITUTES, THE RESULTS OF TESTS BEING EVALUATED MORE OR LESS EMPIRICALLY. IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO SELECT INDIVIDUAL TEST METHODS AND ESTABLISH QUALITY FEATURES WHICH COULD BE INCORPORATED INTO SPECIFICATIONS, THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF FILLER WERE EXAMINED IN THE LABORATORY AND SIMULTANEOUSLY USED AS AGGREGATES FOR THE PRODUCTION OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURE FOR FINE ASPHALTIC CONCRETE. THESE MIXTURES WERE INCORPORATED INTO EXPERIMENTAL SECTIONS OF ROAD CARRYING HEAVY AND VERY HEAVY TRAFFIC. A REPORT GIVING THE RESULTS OF THE TESTS IS NOT YET AVAILABLE.
