TESTING OF NUCLEAR DENSITOMETERS ROAD MEASURING DENSITY AND MOISTURE CONTENT IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION. PART 1

PRUEFUNG VON ISOTOPENSONDEN FUER DICHTE- UND FEUCHTIGKEITSMESSUNGEN IM STRASSENBAU, TEIL I

FOR SOME YEARS NUCLEAR EQUIPMENT HAS BEEN AVAILABLE FOR MEASURING THE BULK DENSITY AND MOISTURE CONTENT OF ROAD MATERIALS WITHOUT THE NEED FOR TAKING SAMPLES. THE METHODS OF MEASUREMENT AND THE EQUIPMENT USED ARE TO BE TESTED AND ERRORS AND LIMITS OF APPLICATION ARE TO BE STUDIED. THE TESTS ARE MAINLY CONCERNED WITH THE STABILITY OF THE MEASUREMENTS DURING FLUCTUATIONS OF THE CURRENT AND THE TEMPERATURE, THE SIZE OF THE VOLUME MEASURED AND THE EFFECT OF INHOMOGENEITIES ON THE MEASURED VALUE. THE TESTING OF SURFACE AND PENETRATION SOUNDING EQUIPMENT IS LARGELY COMPLETED. THE TESTING OF DEEP SOUNDING EQUIPMENT HAS COMMENCED. THE REMAINING WORK IS CONCENTRATED ON THE PRINCIPLES OF CALIBRATION OF THE EQUIPMENT FOR USE IN EARTHWORKS. SUPERSEDES IRRD RESEARCH PROJECT NO 32452.
