TRAFFIC SAFETY. A NATIONAL PROBLEM
THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF ENGINEERING SELECTED THE SUBJECT, TRAFFIC SAFETY, TO BE THE THEME OF ITS SPRING SYMPOSIUM IN APRIL 1966. A COMPREHENSIVE VIEW OF THE CURRENT STATUS OF ACCIDENT REPORTING, THE LEGAL ENVIRONMENT, TYPES AND SEVERITY OF INJURIES CAUSED BY DIFFERENT IMPACTS, AND THE EMERGENCY SERVICES NEEDED OR AVAILABLE AT THE SITE OF ACCIDENTS WAS PRESENTED. THE VEHICLE, SEAT BELTS, DOOR LOCKS AND OTHER SAFETY DEVICES WHICH CAN BE BUILT-IN WERE DISCUSSED, BUT IT IS POINTED OUT THAT THE PSYCHOLOGY OF THE DRIVER MUST ALSO BE CONSIDERED. TREATMENT OF THE INJURED IN HOSPITALS WAS COVERED. MEANS OF ACHIEVING GREATER SAFETY ON THE ROAD, BOTH BY FIRST AID TRAINING OF DRIVERS AND BY THE IMPROVEMENT OF SERVICES TO THE INJURED WERE EMPHASIZED.
