DIN 1996 BROUGHT INTO LINE WITH THE PRESENT STATE OF TESTING TECHNOLOGY

ANPASSUNG DER DIN 1996 AN DEN STAND DER PRUEFTECHNIK

REVISION OF THE 1965/66 EDITION OF DIN 1996, "TESTING OF BITUMINOUS MATERIALS FOR HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION", BECAME NECESSARY IN ORDER TO TAKE ACCOUNT OF IMPROVEMENTS IN TESTING TECHNIQUES AND INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION. OF THE NINETEEN SHEETS OF DIN 1996, SEVENTEEN ARE REVISED OR IN DRAFT FORM. A GREAT PART OF THE REVISION IS CONCERNED WITH THE INTRODUCTION OF NEW CONCEPTS RELATING TO CRITERIA OF FAILURE IN TESTING. THE MAIN STATISTICAL QUALITY-CONTROL PARAMETERS ARE THE SPREAD, WHICH LIMITS THE AMOUNT BY WHICH INDIVIDUAL RESULTS MAY DIFFER FROM ONE ANOTHER; THE REPEATABILITY, AND THE CONFIDENCE INTERVAL. THE TWO FORMER VALUES SERVE TO CONTROL THE TEST PROCESS ITSELF, WHILE THE LAST-NAMED VALUE IS USED IN COMPARING INDIVIDUAL TEST RESULTS WITH THE SPECIFIED VALUE. FUNDAMENTAL CHANGES IN THE METHOD OF TEST HAVE BEEN MADE IN THE TESTS FOR MOISTURE-CONTENT OF BITUMINOUS MATERIALS, BINDER CONTENT, AND PARTICLE-SIZE DISTRIBUTION, PARTLY IN ORDER TO CORRESPOND WITH ISO STANDARDS AND TL GRANULATION. THE QUESTION AS TO WHETHER DOUBLE OR SINGLE TESTS SHOULD BE USED IN BINDER CONTENT DETERMINATIONS WAS HOTLY ARGUED. EXTENSIVE PREPARATORY WORK FACILITATED THE REVISION OF THE METHODS OF DETERMINING DENSITY AND VOIDS RATIO. FURTHER GROUNDWORK FOR THE REVISION OF DIN 1996 WAS PROVIDED BY RESEARCH ACTIVITIES. ONE SECTION IS NOT YET FINISHED.
