EXPERIENCE WITH BITUMINOUS GROUTS

THE APPLICATION OF BITUMINOUS GROUTS, PARTICULARLY WITH HIGHLY STABLE ANIONIC BITUMEN EMULSIONS, HAS EXPERIENCED AN INCREASE IN THE GERMAN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC IN RECENT YEARS. THE LEADER IN ITS USE IS THE HIGHWAY AUTHORITY FOR THE POTSDAM DISTRICT. THE STANDARD TESTS FOR EMULSION WITH 55-57% BITUMEN CONTENT ALLOW NO DISTINCTION RESPECTING THE QUALITIES FOR BITUMINOUS GROUTS, BUT THEY SHOW THAT EMULSIONS WITH HIGHER VISCOSITIES ARE MORE RESISTANT TO WATER. THE VISCOSITY SHOULD NOT BE LESS THAN 25 S. ADDITIONAL TEST METHODS ARE NECESSARY TO PROVIDE A CLEARER PATTERN OF THE SUITABILITY FOR USE IN GROUTING MATERIAL. FOR SEALING GROUTS NATURAL SANDS ARE LESS SUITABLE ON ACCOUNT OF THEIR LOWER SKID RESISTANCE THAN INCREASINGLY USED FINE CRUSHED ROCK. INFORMATION IS PROVIDED ON THE FILLERS AND WETTING AGENTS USED IN THE PROCESS AND COMMENTS ARE MADE UPON THE TESTS FOR ANIONIC EMULSIONS AND THE MIXES, MANUFACTURE AND LAYING PROCESSES OF SEALING AND SURFACING (3 OR 4 MM - 6 MM THICK) GROUTS. FINALLY DESCRIPTIONS ARE PROVIDED OF CONSTRUCTION SITE EXPERIMENTS WITH CONCRETE PADDLE MIXERS AND CONTINUOUS WORKING DRIVE MIXERS. A BITUMEN EMULSION WITH HIGH BITUMEN CONTENT (65%) AND FINE CRUSHED ROCK ENABLED A CONTINUOUSLY HIGH PRODUCTION WITH EXCELLENT SKID RESISTANCE (MEASURED BY SRT PENDULUM) AND ROUGHNESS (SANDPATCH METHOD).
