THE MANUFACTURE AND LAYING OF HYDRAULICALLY BOUND ROADBASES

HERSTELLUNG UND EINBAU VON HYDRAULISCH GEBUNDENEN TRAGSCHICHTEN

RISES IN THE COST OF PETROLEUM PRODUCTS FORCE ROAD PLANNERS TO EMPLOY CONSTRUCTION METHODS INVOLVING LITTLE OR NO USE OF BITUMEN. A PAVEMENT CONSTRUCTION METHOD INVOLVING THE USE OF A HYDRAULICALLY BOUND COARSE AGGREGATE ROADBASE WAS TESTED ON THE WUERZBURG-KIST HIGHWAY JUNCTION. THE CONSTRUCTION METHOD WAS AS FOLLOWS: 3.5 CM GUSSASPHALT, 8.5 CM BINDER, 15 CM BITUMINOUS ROADBASE, 15 CM HYDRAULICALLY BOUND COARSE AGGREGATE ROADBASE WITH MORTAR BINDER (HIGH HYDRAULIC LIME IN ACCORDANCE WITH DIN 1060), 40 CM CRUSHED STONE FROST BLANKET. AFTER CARRYING OUT SUITABILITY TESTS A MIXTURE OF GRANULAR LIMESTONE PARTICLES WAS FORMED IN ACCORDANCE WITH TVT. FROM THE NUMBER OF MIXERS AVAILABLE A TWIN SHAFT CLOSED DRUM MIXER (ZWEILWELLENZWANGSDURCHLAUFMISCHER) WAS USED AS STATIONARY EQUIPMENT. IN LAYING A FINISHER WAS CHOSEN AS THE MOST ECONOMICAL METHOD. COMPACTION WAS CARRIED OUT BY MEANS OF VIBRATING ROLLERS. THE MORTAR BINDER USED RENDERED CURING UNNECESSARY. AFTER 7 DAYS COMPRESSION STRENGTHS WERE BETWEEN 20 AND 30 KP/CM2. THE REQUIRED COMPACTION LEVEL OF 98% SIMPLE (PROCTOR) DENSITY WAS ACHIEVED. MOISTURE CONTENT WAS FOUND TO BE I.M. 6.6%. A SIMILAR METHOD EMPLOYING HYDRAULICALLY BOUND COARSE AGGREGATE ROADBASE WAS SUCCESSFULLY USED ON THE HIGHWAY AT DENKENDORF. THE PAPER REFERS TO EXPERIENCES WITH THIS METHOD ON THE HILPOLTSTEIN TEST ROAD SECTION AND ALSO TO SUGGESTIONS MADE BY BADEN-WUERTTEMBERG REGARDING ITS USE.
