POSSIBILITIES AND REQUIREMENTS FOR RATIONAL ROAD CONSTRUCTION

MOEGLICHKEITEN UND VORAUSSETZUNGEN FUER EINEN RATIONELLEN STRASSENBAU

THIS PAPER WAS PRESENTED TO THE STRASSENBAUTAGUNG (ROAD CONSTRUCTION CONFERENCE) 1974 IN BERLIN. BY MEANS OF INTENSIVE RATIONALIZATION AN ATTEMPT IS BEING MADE TO PROCEED WITH THE NECESSARY FURTHER EXTENSION OF THE ROAD NETWORK IN SPITE OF RESTRICTED BUDGETS. THIS INVOLVES UNIFICATION OF BUILDING TECHNOLOGY AND STANDARDIZATION. THE STANDARDIZATION SPECIFICATIONS FOR BITUMINOUS PAVEMENTS AND CONCRETE ROADS FOR 1966 ARE COMPARED WITH THE PROPOSALS FOR 1974 WHICH AT PRESENT PROVIDE FOR A CONSIDERABLE REDUCTION IN THE PAVEMENT THICKNESS. THE USUAL THICKNESS OF 70 CM FOR THE FROST BLANKET IS ALSO UNDER DISCUSSION. A FURTHER PROPOSAL CONCERNS THE ADMISSION OF ALTERNATIVE TENDERS. RATIONALIZATION IS ALSO POSSIBLE IN EARTHWORKS AND DEWATERING SYSTEMS. IN ADDITION TO CONSTRUCTIONAL PROPOSALS, THE PAPER CONTAINS INFORMATION ON THE INFLUENCE OF THE LENGTH OF CONTRACT SECTION, THE CONTRACT TYPE (SPECIALIZED OR MIXED) AND THE CONSTRUCTION PERIOD ON THE COST, AND IT RECOMMENDS A MORE RAPID EVALUATION OF RESEARCH RESULTS IN PRACTICE.
