DYNAMIC WHEEL LOAD VARIATION - ROAD STRESSING

THE EMPIRICALLY DERIVED RELATION OBTAINED FROM THE AASHO-ROAD-TEST BETWEEN THE AXLE LOAD AND THE CHANGE IN THE ROAD CONDITION WHICH IS TAKEN CARE OF BY THE EQUIVALENCE FACTORS, MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO OBTAIN A QUANTITATIVE JUDGEMENT ON THE MAGNITUDES OF THE AXLE LOAD. AN ATTEMPT IS MADE TO DESCRIBE THE EFFECT OF THE DYNAMIC AXLE LOAD VARIATIONS ON THE ROAD STRESSES. THE STUDY SHOWS THAT AN INCREASE IN THE DYNAMIC OSCILLATIONS INVOLVING AN INCREASE IN THE VARIATION COEFFICIENTS OF 0.1 TO 0.35 LEADS TO AN INCREASE IN THE INFLUENCE COEFFICIENT FROM 1.06 TO 1.78. IT IS ALSO SHOWN THAT A DETERIORATION OF THE ROAD CONDITIONS RESULTS IN A PROGRESSIVE INCREASE IN ROAD STRESSES. AN INCREASE IN THE VARIATION COEFFICIENTS OF THE AXLE LOAD OSCILLATIONS FROM 0.15 TO 0.25 GIVES AN INCREASE IN THE PAVEMENT STRESSES BY A FACTOR OF 1.22 AND AN INCREASE TO 0.35 OF THE FACTOR 1.56.
