INITIAL SMOOTHNESS ON NEW ROADS AND MEASURES FOR ITS AVOIDANCE

ANFANGSGLAETTE AUF NEUEN STRASSEN UND MASSNAHMEN ZU IHRER VERHUETUNG

INITIAL SMOOTHNESS OF ROLLED ASPHALT IS THE RESULT OF EXCESSIVE BINDER CONTENT AND COMPACTION BY ROLLING AT TOO HIGH A TEMPERATURE. THE SMOOTH BINDER SKIN IS DISTURBED AFTER A TIME UNDER TRAFFIC. INITIAL SMOOTHNESS IS AVOIDED BY MECHANICALLY CRUSHED STONE 2/5 IN THE PROPORTION OF 2 TO 3 KG/SQ M AT 90 DEC C SURFACE TEMPERATURE. THE SKIDDING RESISTANCE OF THE PAVEMENT IS MEASURED IN THE NETHERLANDS BY MEANS OF A DECELERATION WHEEL AT 50 KM/HR AND 86% SLIP. THE GERMAN MEASURING APPARATUS USES A BLOCKED WHEEL WITH 100% SLIP. THE MINIMUM DUTCH VALUE OF 0.15% CORRESPONDS TO A GERMAN FRICTION COEFFICIENT OF BETWEEN 0.35 AND 0.41. IN THE NETHERLANDS THE ROAD IS OPENED TO TRAFFIC ONLY AFTER THE DETERMINATION OF THE FRICTION COEFFICIENT. MEASURES FOR THE SURVEILLANCE OF THE SKID RESISTANCE AND OF THE SPREADING EQUIPMENT DURING THE LAYING OF THE PAVEMENT BY THE CONTRACTOR ARE DESCRIBED. THE RATES ARE REDUCED WHERE THE MINIMUM VALUE OF 0.51 (IN FUTURE 0.56) IS NOT REACHED. SINCE THE INTRODUCTION OF THE REGULATIONS GOVERNING SKID RESISTANCE, THE PROPORTION OF SMOOTH PAVEMENT SURFACES HAS DECREASED. CURRENTLY ABOUT 95% OF THE SURFACES MEET THE REQUIREMENTS. FOR SECTIONS WHICH ARE TOO SMOOTH TREATMENTS WITH MINERAL OIL OF TURPENTINE AND CRUSHED SAND IS CARRIED OUT.
