PLASTICS ARE PARTICULARLY SUITABLE FOR THIS PURPOSE AND THE MOST RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN THIS FIELD ARE BRIEFLY DESCRIBED. THE COST FACTOR LIMITS THE RANGE OF THEIR APPLICATION AND DOES NOT PERMIT THE RENEWAL OF COMPLETE BRIDGES AND KILOMETER LONG HIGHWAY STRETCHES. IN SPITE OF THE QUICKER REACTIONS OF PLASTICS (IN COMPARISON TO CEMENT), THERE ARE LIMITS TO THE EPOXIDES AND POLYURETHANES MOST WIDELY USED IN CIVIL ENGINEERING (VERY DEPENDENT ON TEMPERATURE AND DAMPNESS). THE REACTIVE ACRYLATES ARE AN ADVANCE: THEY ARE EASIER PLASTIFIED, HAVE A REACTIVITY LIMIT UNDER MINUS 20 DEG C AND ARE LESS TEMPERATURE DEPENDENT, BUT JUST AS COMPATIBLE WITH ASPHALT AS EPOXIDES AND URETHANES. THE EXTREMELY SHORT DROPPING TIME (10 TO 20 MINUTES) MILITATES AGAINST WIDER USE, BUT IS AN ADVANTAGE WHERE A VERY SHORT BLOCKING TIME IS NECESSARY AND HIGH STRENGTHS MUST BE REACHED VERY QUICKLY. EXAMPLES OF THE USE OF THIS MATERIAL IN FLAT SURFACES (THE REPAIR OF PAVEMENTS) AND IN BULK FORM (REPAIR OF DAMAGED CONCRETE) ARE DESCRIBED.
