THE STABILITY PROBLEM OF BITUMINOUS ROAD PAVEMENTS IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF MUNICIPAL ROADS

THE QUESTION OF THE RESISTANCE TO DEFORMATION IS OF PARTICULAR IMPORTANCE IN URBAN ROAD CONSTRUCTION. SITUATIONS ARISE HERE WHICH HAVE A DELETERIOUS EFFECT ON THE MATERIAL PROPERTIES WHICH EFFECT STABILITY. THE TVBIT 3/72, WHICH WAS ORIENTATED TOWARDS A HIGH LEVEL OF WEAR RESISTANCE BECAUSE OF THE WEAR OF STUDDED TYRES, HAS, SINCE THE BAN ON THESE TYRES, BEEN CORRECTED TO GIVE A HIGHER PRIORITY TO DEFORMATION RESISTANCE (BMV V 11.7.75). A TEN YEAR RESEARCH PROGRAMME CARRIED OUT BY THE MUNICH CITY AUTHORITIES HAS UNEARTHED DEFORMATION PROBLEMS IN BOTH THE BASE COURSE AND THE ROAD BASE, SUCH AS DEFICIENCIES IN THE MIX COMPOSITION, LAYING FAULTS, ETC. EXTERNAL INFLUENCES ON THE DEFORMATION BEHAVIOUR AND THE OBSTRUCTIONS ARE MORE IMPORTANT IN URBAN ROAD CONSTRUCTION THAN IN ROADS IN RURAL AREAS. STRONGER MEASURES MUST, THEREFORE, BE TAKEN IN THE SELECTION OF THE MATERIALS, THE MIXING AND THE DESIGN. A LARGE SECTION DEALS WITH THE POSSIBILITIES AND PROBLEMS IN THE THEORETICAL COMPREHENSION OF THE LOADING RELATIONS AND A DISCUSSION OF THE STRESS RELATIONS UNDER VERTICAL, HORIZONTAL AND INCLINED LOADING. IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO DESCRIBE CLEARLY AND IN A REALISTIC FASHION THE DEFORMATION BEHAVIOUR UNDER VARIOUS INFLUENCES AND IN RELATION TO ALL MATERIAL-TECHNICAL INDIVIDUAL FACTORS. IT IS POSSIBLE, HOWEVER, TO DERIVE SOME BASIC PRINCIPLES WHICH, IF ADHERED TO, ENABLE DEFORMATION RESISTANT BITUMINOUS PAVEMENTS TO BE CONSTRUCTED UNDER EXTREME CONDITIONS.
