THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE DESIGN FOR THE NEW ELBE TUNNEL IN HAMBURG

DIE ENTWICKLUNG DES ENTWURFS FUER DEN NEUEN ELBTUNNEL IN HAMBURG

THE ELBE TUNNEL IN HAMBURG IS THE LARGEST INDIVIDUAL STRUCTURE IN THE MOTORWAY NETWORK OF THE GERMAN FEDERAL REPUBLIC. FOLLOWING AN ACCOUNT OF THE RELATIONSHIP OF THE TUNNEL WITH THE MOTORWAY NETWORK, THE BOUNDARY CONDITIONS FOR THE TUNNEL AND THE TENDER AND ITS PREPARATION, THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE WORKING DESIGN FROM THE PROPOSALS OF THE FIVE TENDERING GROUPS IS DESCRIBED. THESE GROUPS HAD PROPOSED TWENTY FIVE VARIATIONS FOR CONTRACT 1 "RIVER SECTION", 29 VARIATIONS FOR CONTRACT 2 "SLOPING SECTION" (SHIELD DRIVEN), AND 7 VARIATIONS FOR CONTRACT 3 "NORTH SECTION" IN OPEN CUT. THE LARGE QUANTITY OF MATERIAL AVAILABLE WAS EVALUATED AND AN OPTIMUM DESIGN WAS ASSEMBLED AS A WORKING CONCEPT. FOR THE TOTAL DESIGN, SOUTH RAMPS, NORTH AND SOUTH GRID SECTIONS, THE IN-SITU CONCRETE TUNNEL, THE RIVER SECTION, THE SLOPING SECTION AND THE NORTHERN TUNNEL IN OPEN CUT, THE ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS OF THE MOST IMPORTANT VARIATIONS ARE DESCRIBED IN OUTLINE, EVALUATED COMPARATIVELY AND THE CONSTRUCTION DECISIONS EXPLAINED. THE CONTRACT FOR THE THREE SECTIONS WAS AWARDED ON 24.5.1968 AND THE NEW ELBE TUNNEL WAS OPENED TO TRAFFIC ON 10.1.1975.
