SPECIAL FINISHER RATIONALIZES THE LAYING OF A GUSSASPHALT COURSE

SPEZIALFERTIGER RATIONALISIERT EINBAU EINER GUSSASPHALTSCHICHT

A GUSSASPHALT FINISHER MADE BY SAGER AND WORNER, HANNOVER, WAS USED FOR THE REPAIR OF INDENTATIONS CAUSED BY STUDDED TYRES ON THE GUSSASPHALT SURFACING OF THE MOTORWAY BETWEEN HANNOVER AND OBERHAUSEN OVER A 4 KM LONG STRETCH BETWEEN EXTER AND HERFORD. THIS MACHINE DID NOT RUN ON RAILS BUT ON SMALL RUBBER TYRES AND INCORPORATES A SIDE PLATFORM WHICH MAKES A LAYING WIDTH OF 3.75 PLUS 0.75 M POSSIBLE. IT IS THUS POSSIBLE TO LAY THE 0.75 M WIDE INNER BOUNDARY STRIP IN ONE WORKING SEQUENCE WITH THE OVERTAKING LANE. THE NECESSITY FOR A SPECIAL CONSTRUCTION SEQUENCE FOR THIS BOUNDARY STRIP IS THEREFORE ELIMINATED. FEARS THAT THE EXTREME SHORTNESS OF THE FINISHER AND THE EFFECT OF RUNNING ON SMALL RUBBER TYRES WOULD LEAD TO DEFECTS IN THE EVENNESS OF THE PAVEMENT HAVE NOT BEEN CONFIRMED. NEVERTHELESS, PARTICULAR CARE WAS TAKEN TO ENSURE THE EVENNESS OF THE UNDERLAY. A GUSSASPHALT WAS LAID WITH B 45, 2% BY WEIGHT OF TRINIDAD EPURE AND 48% BY WEIGHT OF CHIPPINGS. MECHANICAL SPREADING (15 KG/M2 CHIPPINGS 5/18 MM) COVERED ONLY TWO-THIRDS OF THE TRAFFIC LANE STRIP, AND IT WAS NECESSARY TO SPRAY THE EDGES BY HAND. AN IMPROVEMENT OF THE SPREADING PROCESS SHOULD PROVE NECESSARY.
