MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR OF CONCRETE ROADS IN THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY

UNTERHALTUNG UND INSTANDSETZUNG VON BETONFAHRBAHNEN IN DER BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND

THE ACTUAL CONSTRUCTION OF CONCRETE ROADS INFLUENCES THEIR MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR. IN THE FIRST SECTION THE AUTHOR DEALS WITH PRESENT METHODS OF CONSTRUCTION IN RELATION TO THEIR MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR. THESE METHODS INVOLVE LESS EXPENDITURE THAN FORMER CONSTRUCTION METHODS FOR THE FOLLOWING REASONS: (1) THE UNIFORM BEARING CAPACITY OF SUBSTRATA MADE FROM ROAD BASES BOUND WITH BINDERS; (2) THE SHORT 5 M SLABS WHICH REDUCE BENDING STRESS FROM BOTH UNEVENLY DISTRIBUTED THERMAL STRESS AND JOINT SEALING STRESS; (3) THE HIGH FRICTION LEVEL OCCURRING BETWEEN SURFACE AND ROAD BASE CAUSING EVEN CRACKING OF CONTRACTION JOINTS; (4) IMPROVEMENTS IN CONCRETE TECHNOLOGY FOR RAISING RESISTANCE TO WEAR AND TEAR; (5) THE RESISTANCE OF AIR ENTRAINED CONCRETE TO FROST AND THAWING SALTS. ADEQUATE MAINTENANCE OF THE JOINTS IS NECESSARY. THIS POINT IS DISCUSSED IN DETAIL. ALSO DEALT WITH ARE EXPERIMENTAL ROADS FOR PRECISE ANALYSIS OF THE NECESSITY FOR JOINT SEALING AND THE MAINTENANCE OF JOINT WIDTHS OF ONLY 3 MM WITHOUT JOINT SEALING AS IS STANDARD IN AUSTRIA. PROTECTING SURFACES FROM THE EFFECTS OF THAWING SALTS BELONGS TO THE AREA OF MATERIAL MAINTENANCE, AS DOES THE ELIMINATION OF INDIVIDUAL FAULTY SLABS (E.G. IN THE USE OF POURED CONCRETE). ROAD SECTIONS MAY BE REPAIRED IN THE FOLLOWING WAYS: (1) BY MEANS OF THIN, BITUMINOUS SURFACES; (2) BY OVERLAYING CEMENT OR SYNTHETIC MORTARS (DIFFICULT TO USE DUE TO THE NEED FOR THOROUGH PREPARATION); (3) THE OVERLAYING OF BITUMINOUS AND CEMENT BOUND PAVEMENTS ON DAMAGED CONCRETE SURFACES BY USING FROST BLANKETS AS A ROAD BASE. THE FG ARE AT PRESENT PREPARING A LEAFLET ON PAVEMENT SEALING WITH SYNTHETIC MORTARS. FURTHER EXPERIMENTS WILL HOWEVER NEED TO BE CARRIED OUT. ANOTHER ASPECT OF THIS FIELD IS THE IMPROVEMENT OF THE SKIDDING COEFFICIENT BY MEANS OF GROOVING.
