TRENDS IN THE USE OF BITUMEN AND ASPHALT

ENTWICKLUNGSTENDENZEN BEI DER ANWENDUNG VON BITUMEN UND ASPHALT

BASIC ANALYSES OF THE VOLUME RELATIONS IN COMPACTED MIXES HAVE LED TO A NEW SYSTEM FOR JUDGING ASPHALTS. NEW CLASSIFICATION CRITERIA HAVE ARISEN FROM THE CALCULATION OF VOIDS IN THE STRUCTURE IN THE COMPACTED MIX, THE RATIO OF FILLING OF VOIDS WITH BINDER OR WITH BITUMINOUS MORTAR AND THE BEHAVIOUR OF THE MIX UNDER COMPACTION. THESE ARE EXTENDED BY TEST VALUES INTO THE BEHAVIOUR OF MATERIAL UNDER LONG TERM UNIAXIAL OR BIAXIAL LOADING, BY THE DEFINITION OF THE BITUMINOUS MORTARS AND THEIR PROPERTIES. ALSO DERIVED ARE THE STRENGTH AND DEFORMATION PROPERTIES UNDER VARIABLE LOADING IN RELATION TO THE MATERIAL COMPONENTS ON THE ONE HAND, AND THE TEMPERATURE AND TIME OF LOADING ON THE OTHER, A NECESSARY PREREQUISITE FOR THE ANALYSIS OF ASPHALT STRUCTURES. CORRESPONDING METHODS OF DETERMINING THE STRESSES AND SETTLEMENTS HAVE BEEN AVAILABLE FOR THE LAST SEVEN YEARS. SIMILAR ATTEMPTS HAVE BEEN MADE IN THE FIELD OF SEALING TECHNOLOGY, WHERE EFFORTS HAVE BEEN MADE TO STUDY THE BEHAVIOUR OF BITUMINOUS MATERIALS BY CALCULATION AND THUS TO CHECK CONSTRUCTION REGULATIONS AND TO EXTEND THEM.
