USE OF WASTE PRODUCTS IN ROADS: EVALUATION OF TESTS AND EXPERIMENTS AT HOME AND ABROAD

IN AN EFFORT TO ELIMINATE WASTE MATERIALS WITHOUT POLLUTING THE ENVIRONMENT, TESTS HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT ON THE USE OF THESE MATERIALS IN ROADS. THEY MAY BE USED IN TWO WAYS: 1 - IN SMALL PROPORTIONS IN UNBOUND, BITUMEN-BOUND OR HYDRAULICALLY-BOUND AGGREGATES FOR ROADS, WHICH RAISES THE QUESTION AS TO THE PROPORTION OF WASTE MATERIAL WHICH CAN BE ADDED TO A CONVENTIONAL AGGREGATE MIXTURE WITHOUT CAUSING DAMAGE, AND 2 - TO EFFECT DESIRED IMPROVEMENTS IN THE PROPERTIES OF SPECIFIC UNBOUND OR BOUND AGGREGATE MIXTURES FOR ROADS. THIS MEANS THAT THE RELEVANT WASTE PRODUCT IS NO LONGER CONSIDERED AS WASTE BUT AS A NEW PRODUCT WITH A SPECIFIC FIELD OF APPLICATION. THE STATE OF THE ART OF KNOWLEDGE ON WASTE PRODUCTS IS TO BE INDICATED BY A COMPREHENSIVE EVALUATION OF THE LITERATURE COMBINED WITH AN EVALUATION OF EXPERIMENTAL ROADS WHERE THE MATERIALS HAVE BEEN USED.
