TESTING AND SELECTION OF THIN PLASTIC SURFACINGS ON STEEL CARRIAGEWAYS

THIN PLASTIC SURFACINGS ON STEEL CARRIAGEWAYS ARE USED AS TEMPORARY MEASURE ON BRIDGES, ON CONVERTIBLE ELEVATED ROADS AND ON MOVABLE BRIDGES WHERE IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE STRUCTURE IS LIGHTWEIGHT. THE STEEL STRUCTURE MAY HAVE STEEL SHEET THICKNESS OF 5MM, 9MM OR 12MM, AND THE THIN SURFACING IS PLACED ON TOP OF THIS. THE SURFACINGS MAY BE 6MM OR 15MM THICK. THE FUNDAMENTAL CRITERIA FOR THE CHOICE OF THE SURFACINGS ARE: 1 - SUFFICIENT ADHESION TO THE STEEL SHEET; 2 - CORROSION PROTECTION AND FREEDOM FROM CRACKING; 3 - WEAR STRENGTH AND RESISTANCE TO SLIPPING; 4 - PERMANENTLY GOOD PROPERTIES AT LOW AND HIGH TEMPERATURES; 5 - EASE OF REPAIR; 6 - BEHAVIOUR OF THE SURFACING DURING ICING. IN ORDER TO TEST THE SURFACINGS ON THE MARKET A PRELIMINARY SELECTION IS TO BE MADE ON THE BASIS OF LABORATORY TESTS WITH SMALL SAMPLES. THIS IS TO BE FOLLOWED BY FULL-SCALE TESTS ON SLABS SURFACED WITH THE SAMPLES AND SUBJECTED TO TRAFFIC FOR AT LEAST ONE YEAR. EVALUATION BASED ON THE CRITERIA GIVEN SHOULD MAKE A FINAL SELECTION POSSIBLE.
