DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW METHOD OF DETERMINING THE BEARING CAPACITY OF SOILS AND SOIL-CHEMICAL MIXTURES AFTER THAWING - PART 2

NUMEROUS TESTS HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT IN THE LAST FOUR YEARS TO ESTABLISH A BASIS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW TEST PROCEDURE. THESE INVOLVED STUDIES OF THE FROST BEHAVIOUR OF 26 NATURAL SOILS, 7 CEMENT TREATED SOILS AND FOUR LIME TREATED SOILS. THE NUMBER AND DURATION OF FROST-THAW PERIODS, TEMPERATURE, DRYING DENSITY AND MOISTURE CONTENT WERE VARIED. AS THE TESTS WERE CONDUCTED FOR VARIOUS BODIES AND NO MEANS WERE AVAILABLE FOR COMPLETE EVALUATION AND ESTABLISHMENT OF A TESTING PROCEDURE, THE RESULTS OF THESE STUDIES HAVE NEVER BEEN SUMMARIZED. THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO EVALUATE ALL THE TESTS CARRIED OUT SO FAR, TO CONDUCT COMPARATIVE TESTS WITH EACH METHOD ON SIMILAR TYPES OF SOIL, AND TO SPECIFY A TEST PROCEDURE FOR ESTABLISHING THE FROST SENSITIVITY OF NATURAL SOILS AND SOIL CHEMICAL MIXTURES WHICH WOULD SATISFY REQUIREMENTS IN PRACTICE.
