THE AIM OF THIS WORK IS TO DEVELOP PRINCIPLES WHICH CAN BE USED FOR THE OPTIMUM DESIGN OF TWISTING SECTIONS WITH REFERENCE TO WATER RUN-OFF WHEN THERE IS HEAVY RAIN. WORK CARRIED OUT HITHERTO HAS BEEN LIMITED TO FLAT BASE SURFACES; THIS CONTINUOUS RUN-OFF HAS BEEN INSUFFICIENTLY EXAMINED. A MODEL IS TO BE USED TO STUDY FLAT AND SPATIALLY CURVED SURFACES OF VARYING ROUGHNESS AND LONGITUDINAL GRADIENT UNDER THE ACTION OF RAIN. THE WATER FILM THICKNESS IS BEING RECORDED BY MEANS OF A NEWLY DEVELOPED ELECTRICAL MEASURING PROCEDURE AND BY PHOTOGRAMMETRY. AN ATTEMPT IS BEING MADE TO SET UP A SUITABLE MATHEMATICAL-MECHANICAL MODEL, WHICH PERMITS THE TREATMENT OF THE PROBLEM ON DATA PROCESSING EQUIPMENT WITH A VARIATION OF THE BOUNDARY CONDITIONS. THE RESULTS OF THE WORK ARE INTENDED TO BE PROPOSALS FOR THE STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF TWISTING SECTIONS IN RELATION TO THE QUALITY OF THE ROAD AND THE EXISTING DESIGN ELEMENTS.
