USE OF TECHNICAL CONTROL METHODS TO IMPROVE TRAFFIC FLOW ON FAST ROADS - MEASUREMENTS, DATA RECORDING AND PROCESSING

THE AIM OF THIS RESEARCH PROJECT IS TO EXAMINE TWO PROBLEMS WHICH HAVE TO BE SOLVED IF A SITUATION-ORIENTATED CONTROL OF TRAFFIC ON FAST ROADS BY A TRAFFIC COMPUTER IS TO BE POSSIBLE: (1) DEVELOPMENT OF A DYNAMIC MACROSCOPIC TRAFFIC FLOW MODEL WHICH IS CAPABLE OF RELIABLY DESCRIBING TRAFFIC ON A SECTION OF ROAD AND OF MAKING SHORT-TERM FORECASTS, ATTENTION BEING PAID IN PARTICULAR TO FLUCTUATING TRAFFIC CONDITIONS AND COMPOSITION OF THE TRAFFIC; (2) AN EXPLANATION OF THE AMOUNT OF MEASURED DATA WHICH HAVE TO BE RECORDED IN ORDER THAT AT ANY GIVEN MOMENT A TRAFFIC COMPUTER IS PROVIDED WITH RELIABLE INFORMATION ON THE TRAFFIC CONDITIONS ALONG A FAIRLY LONG SECTION OF ROAD.
