EFFECTS OF DEICING SALT SPREADING ON THE SAFETY OF RURAL ROADS

AUSWIRKUNGEN DER STREUUNG VON TAUSALZEN AUF DIE VERKEHRSSICHERHEIT VON LANDSTRASSEN

THE PURPOSE OF THE RESEARCH IS TO EXAMINE WHETHER (1) THERE IS A RELATION BETWEEN CARRIAGEWAY CONDITION, EXPRESSED BY THE STATEMENTS ON CONDITION ISSUED BY THE ROAD CONSTRUCTION AUTHORITIES, AND ACCIDENT RATES DURING THE WINTER MONTHS; (2) WHETHER A SIGNIFICANT DECREASE IN ACCIDENT RATES CAN BE ACHIEVED BY THE USE OF DEICING SALT; AND (3) WHETHER THERE IS A RELATION BETWEEN THE QUANTITIES OF DEICING SALT USED PER SQUARE METRE OF CARRIAGEWAY SURFACE AND ACCIDENT RATE. EXISTING OFFICIAL ACCIDENT STATISTICS WHICH GIVE DETAILS OF SECTIONS OF ROAD PROVIDE A SUITABLE BASIS FOR WORKING OUT RELATIONS WHICH ARE MORE ACCURATE THAN INFORMATION PROVIDED HITHERTO.
