LANE BEHAVIOUR ON TWO-LANED ROADS WITH TWO-WAY TRAFFIC (PILOT-STUDY)

SPURVERHALTEN AUF ZWEISPURIGEN LANDSTRASSEN MIT GEGENVERKEHR (PILOT-STUDY)

IN GERMAN SPECIFICATIONS RAL-Q 1973 AN ALLOWANCE IS MADE, IN THE CASE OF SINGLE CARRIAGEWAY ROADS USED BY TWO-WAY TRAFFIC, FOR A MARGIN OF MOVEMENT OF 0.25 M. SPECIFICATIONS RAST-Q 1968 DEMAND A MARGIN OF MOVEMENT FOR TWO-WAY TRAFFIC OF 0.50 M. THESE QUANTITIES HAVE BEEN ESTIMATED. SO THAT THESE SPACES FOR MOVEMENT ON ROADS WITH TWO-WAY TRAFFIC CAN BE DESIGNED WITHIN THE PLANNED NEW "SPECIFICATION FOR THE LAY-OUT OF ROADS - SUBSECTION ON TRANSVERSE PROFILE", FURTHER STUDIES ARE NECESSARY. AS YET THE EXTENT TO WHICH DRIVERS ON RURAL ROADS MAKE USE OF THE SPACE AVAILABLE TO THEM HAS NOT BEEN DETERMINED, NOR HAVE THOSE INFLUENCES WHICH DETERMINE CHOICE OF TRAFFIC LANE WITHIN THE TRAFFIC SPACE AVAILABLE. THE RESEARCH IS INTENDED TO INDICATE POSSIBILITIES OF MAKING AN EMPIRICAL STUDY OF THE PROBLEM ON THE ONE HAND, AND ALSO TO PROVIDE RESULTS WHICH COULD BE USED FOR THE DESIGN OF A TRANSVERSE PROFILE ON A TWO-LANED ROAD.
