RESISTANCE FUNCTION OF THE GRAVITY MODEL IN RELATION TO STRUCTURAL INFLUENCES WHICH CAN BE FORECAST

PREVIOUS RESEARCH WORK HAS HIGHLIGHTED THE USEFULNESS OF THE GRAVITY MODEL AS A TRAFFIC DISTRIBUTION MODEL, AND HAS SHOWN THAT THE USE OF THE GRAVITY MODEL AT THE PLANNING STAGE IS DEPENDENT ABOVE ALL ON THE FORECASTING OF TRAFFIC VOLUME AND THE RESISTANCE FUNCTION. WHEREAS TRAFFIC VOLUME CAN BE FORECAST IN RELATION TO LAND USE AND THE STRUCTURE OF URBAN AND REGIONAL SPACE, THE FUNCTIONAL RELATIONS WITHIN THE RESISTANCE FUNCTION ARE STILL NOT CLEAR. THE AIM OF THE RESEARCH PROJECT IS TO USE EXISTING DATA ON URBAN COUNTS FOR THE URBAN AREA AND THE SURROUNDING COUNTRYSIDE. THIS WILL ENABLE THE RESISTANCE FUNCTION AND ITS EFFECT ON THE DISTRIBUTION OF INDIVIDUAL VEHICLE TRAFFIC TO BE ESTABLISHED.
