RESEARCH INTO THE EUROPEAN STANDARDIZATION OF THE TRANSMISSION OF INFORMATION TO VEHICLES

RECHERCHE D'UNE NORMALISATION EUROPEENNE DE LA TRANSMISSION D'INFORMATIONS VERS LES VEHICULES.

THE DESIGN OF AN ADEQUATE HIGHWAY COMMUNICATION SYSTEM IS A PARTICULARLY COMPLEX PROBLEM IN EUROPE, BECAUSE OF LINGUISTIC AND NATIONAL DIVERSITY. THE USE OF SYMBOLS WOULD SIMPLIFY THESE PROBLEMS; SEVERAL INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATIONS HAVE CONCENTRATED THEIR EFFORTS ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS. THESE OPERATE AT THREE DISTINCT LEVELS: THE GENERAL OR REGIONAL LEVEL, THE ZONAL LEVEL AND THE LOCAL LEVEL. ANOTHER CRITERION IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THESE SYSTEMS IS THAT OF COSTS AND PARTICULARLY THAT OF THE EQUIPMENT IN THE VEHICLES. IT IS IN THE FIELD OF COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS AT A LOCAL LEVEL THAT MOST DIFFICULTIES ARISE, GIVEN THE NUMBER OF POSSIBILITIES OF ACCEPTABLE SOLUTIONS. SOME SOLUTIONS INVOLVE THE VISUAL DISPLAY OF MESSAGES INSIDE THE VEHICLE, OTHERS THE USE OF ORAL MESSAGES. SEVERAL COUNTRIES HAVE HAD EXPERIENCE IN THIS FIELD BUT NO STANDARDIZATION HAS YET BEEN CARRIED OUT. FOR THE COVERING ABSTRACT OF THE CONFERENCE, SEE IRRD ABSTRACT NO. 102873.
