MEASUREMENT OF PORE WATER PRESSURE IN SOIL

MESURE DE LA TENSION DE L'EAU INTERSTITIELLE DANS LES SOLS

PORE WATER PRESSURE INFLUENCES BOTH THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF THE SOIL AND WATER MOVEMENTS WITHIN THE SOIL. ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO A NUMBER OF BASIC PRINCIPLES GOVERNING THE CONSTITUTIVE PHASES OF SOIL, FIELD OF FORCES IN THE PORE WATER, AND THE POTENTIALS FROM WHICH THOSE FORCES ARE DERIVED. IN A TEMPERATE OCEANIC CLIMATE, PORE WATER PRESSURE IS OFTEN NEGATIVE AND IS MEASURED WITH TENSION METERS. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THESE DEVICES AND THEIR OPERATIONAL CHARACTERISTICS: RESPONSE TIME AND AIR PRESSURE AT ENTRY POINT. A DESCRIPTION IS PRESENTED OF MEASURING APPARATUS DEVELOPED AT THE "CENTRE DE RECHERCHES ROUTIERES" (ROAD RESEARCH CENTRE) FOR INVESTIGATIONS INTO THE PROTECTION OF SUBGRADES AGAINST WATER. THE SATISFACTORY OPERATION OF THESE DEVICES SHOWS THAT THE MEASUREMENT OF PORE WATER PRESSURE LOWER THAN ONE ATMOSPHERE DOES NOT PRESENT ANY DIFFICULTY ANYMORE. EXAMPLES SHOW THE USES OF THE ABOVE DEVICES: FORECAST OF MOISTURE CONTENT UNDER PAVEMENTS, PORE WATER MOVEMENTS, AND DRAINAGE PROBLEMS.
