ROAD TRAFFIC NOISE - INVESTIGATION OF THE EFFECTS OF ROAD SURFACE CHARACTERISTICS ON THE GENERATION OF TRAFFIC NOISE

ENVIRONNEMENT ACOUSTIQUE DE LA ROUTE - ETUDE EXPERIMENTALE DE L'INFLUENCE DU REVETEMENT SUR LE BRUIT EMIS PAR LE TRAFIC

THE OBJECTIVES OF THE RESEARCH ARE: (1) TO DETERMINE THE SURFACE CHARACTERISTICS THAT GIVE THE BEST COMPROMISE BETWEEN SAFETY REQUIREMENTS (ROUGHNESS) AND THE NEED TO MINIMISE NOISE BOTH FOR ROAD USERS AND THOSE LIVING ALONG THE ROUTE. (2) TO DETERMINE THE MAXIMUM REDUCTION OF TRAFFIC NOISE THAT CAN BE ACHIEVED BY IMPROVING THE SURFACE QUALITY OF THE ROAD LAYERS. WITH REGARD TO (1) THE INVESTIGATION WILL CONCERN THE RELATIONS BETWEEN THE SPECTRUM OF THE VEHICLE ROLLING NOISE AND THAT OF THE ROAD SURFACE IRREGULARITIES. IN THE CASE OF (2) A COMPARISON IS TO BE MADE BETWEEN THE NOISE LEVELS DUE TO THE SAME TRAFFIC RUNNING OVER DIFFERENT SURFACE TEST SECTIONS.
