IN 1972, THE CIVIL ENGINEERING BOARD (DIRECTION DES TRAVAUX PUBLICS), IN SENEGAL STARTED A SERIES OF NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTS WITH DEFLECTOMETERS TO DETERMINE HOW LONG IT WOULD BE BEFORE SOME SECTIONS OF THE ROAD NETWORK HAD TO BE STRENGTHENED. THESE TESTS WERE CONDUCTED ACCORDING TO THE CEBTP RECOMMENDATIONS GIVEN IN THE "MANUAL FOR THE STRENGTHENING OF METALLED ROADS IN TROPICAL AFRICA AND IN MADAGASCAR." THESE TESTS, CARRIED OUT BY THE CIVIL ENGINEERING AND BUILDING LABORATORY, IN DAKAR, WERE PERFORMED: (1) TO STUDY THE STRENGTHENING OF 140 KM OF ROADS; (2) TO DETERMINE WHEN STRENGTHENING OPERATIONS SHOULD START ON 1000 KM OF METALLED ROADS. PART 1 OF THE REPORT DESCRIBES THE EQUIPMENT AND TEST PROCEDURES USED, AND RECALLS PAVEMENT DESIGN IN SENEGAL AND THE MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF THE NETWORK TESTED. MENTION IS MADE OF THE PERMISSIBLE TRAFFIC/DEFLECTION RELATION AND OF THE EVOLUTION IN DEFLECTION AS A FUNCTION OF THE TRAFFIC. PART 2 DEALS WITH A SPECIFIC INVESTIGATION CARRIED OUT IN 1974 BY THE BCEOM AND THE LBTP, INTO THE STRENGTHENING OF 220 KM TO WHICH PRIORITY FOR STRENGTHENING HAD BEEN GIVEN. IT ENABLED THE TIME OF STRENGTHENING TO BE MORE ACCURATELY DETERMINED BY COMBINING THE DEFORMABILITY CRITERION BASED ON DEFLECTION MEASUREMENTS TO THE DETERIORATION CRITERIA AND APPARENT DEFORMATIONS OBSERVED VISUALLY, AND TO THE GEOTECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PAVEMENT AND ITS SUPPORT DETERMINED FROM LABORATORY TESTS.
