THIS PAPER COMPRISES TWO PARTS: THE FIRST DEALS WITH THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF THE PROBLEM OF STRENGTHENING PAVEMENTS AND GENERAL CASES OF ITS APPLICATION: THE USEFULNESS OF DEFLECTION MEASUREMENTS AS AN INDICATION OF THE QUALITY AND THE BEHAVIOUR OF PAVEMENTS; THE NOTION OF ADMISSIBLE DEFLECTION AND THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THIS VALUE AND THE LIFE OF THE PAVEMENT; THE PROCEDURE TO BE FOLLOWED IN THE COURSE OF A DEFLECTION STUDY AND METHODS OF INTERPRETATION FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF STRENGTHENING DESIGN; METHODS OF STRENGTHENING AND THE EXECUTION OF THE WORK. THE SECOND PART TREATS SUCCESSIVELY OF: STRENGTHENING OF A PAVEMENT RESTING ON EXPANDED CLAY; STRENGTHENING OF PAVEMENTS CONSISTING OF CEMENT STABILIZED ROAD BASES; THE DEGREE TO WHICH DIFFERENT TYPES OF STRENGTHENING MATERIALS CAN REDUCE THE DEFLECTION; THE DEVELOPMENT OF DEFLECTION WITH TIME AND THE INFLUENCE OF THIS DEVELOPMENT ON THE OPTIMUM TIMES OF STRENGTHENING.
