IN THE DESIGN OF ROAD TUNNELS AND THEIR VENTILATION EQUIPMENT, THE GREATEST POSSIBLE DEGREE OF RELIABILITY IS REQUIRED OF THE DATA REGARDING THE NOXIOUS SUBSTANCES TO BE EXPECTED IN THE EXHAUST GASES OF CARS. INVESTIGATIONS HAVE BEEN UNDERTAKEN WITH THE AIM OF CHECKING THE CUSTOMARY DESIGN PROCEDURES USED TO DATE, WITH REFERENCE TO THE CO INTAKE WHICH MAN CAN SURVIVE, THE INFLUENCE FACTORS AND THE IMPROVEMENT IN EXHAUST GASES OF THE RECENT PETROL ENGINES. THE DEGREE OF POISONING RESULTING FROM CO IS DETERMINED FROM ITS CONCENTRATION IN THE BREATH AND THE PERIOD OF EXPOSURE. THE RELATIONS BETWEEN THE PERIOD OF EXPOSURE, THE HEIGHT ABOVE SEA LEVEL AND THE ALLOWABLE CONCENTRATION CAN BE CALCULATED FROM THE OXYHAEMOGLOBIN DISSOCIATION CURVES AND INTERNATIONAL STANDARD-ATMOSPHERE-VALUES OF THE BAROMETER READINGS AS WELL AS THE VOLUME OF BREATH. THE HIGHEST CO EMISSIONS FOR PETROL DRIVEN ENGINES, DEPENDING ON THE SIZE OF ENGINE, ARISE AT MAXIMUM POWER OUTPUT, INCREASING SEA LEVELS AND AN IRREGULAR DRIVING PATTERN. THE GREATEST AREA OF UNCERTAINTY IN THE PREDICTION OF SPECIFIC CO EMISSIONS LIES IN THE SUBJECTIVE VARIABLE DRIVING PATTERN OF EACH DRIVER. AN ATTEMPT SHOULD, THEREFORE, BE MADE TO ACHIEVE AN EVEN TRAFFIC FLOW BY MEANS OF SUITABLE TRAFFIC SIGNALS.
