THE TRAFFIC CAPACITY OF MOUNTAIN MOTORWAYS - A CONTRIBUTION TO THE BEHAVIOUR OF VEHICLES ON ROADS WITH SEPARATE CARRIAGEWAYS WITH SPECIAL CONSIDERATION OF THE INFLUENCE OF GRADIENT AND TRAFFIC COMPOSITION

DIE LEISTUNGSFAEHIGKEIT VON GEBIRGSAUTOBAHNEN EIN BEITRAG ZUM VERHALTEN VON KRAFTFAHRZEUGEN AUF STRASSEN MIT GETRENNTEN RICHTUNGSFAHRBAHNEN AUS DER BERUECKSICHTIGUNG DER EINFLUESSE AUS DER STRASSENLAENGSNEIGUNG UND DER VERKEHRSZUSAMMENSETZUNG

AN ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO OBTAIN CAPACITY LIMITS BY MEANS OF COMPREHENSIVE MEASUREMENTS ESPECIALLY ON STRETCHES OF ROADS WITH STEEP GRADIENTS. IN COMPARISON WITH THE HIGHWAY CAPACITY MANUAL 1965 (HCM) LOWER CAPACITIES WERE OBSERVED ON LEVEL STRETCHES, WHEREAS HIGHER CAPACITIES WERE OBSERVED ON STRETCHES WITH STEEP GRADIENTS ESPECIALLY WHERE THERE WAS A HIGH PROPORTION OF HEAVY VEHICLES. THE TRAFFIC OBSERVATIONS WERE ALSO EVALUATED SEPARATELY FOR EACH CARRIAGEWAY WITH RESPECT TO THE LANE CAPACITY, THE PROPORTION OF GOODS VEHICLES, AND THE LANE LOADINGS. FOR INSTANCE THE LIMITING CAPACITY OF THE RIGHTHAND CARRIAGEWAY DECREASED FROM 1200 VEH/H (LEVEL ROAD, NO GOODS TRAFFIC) TO 350 VEH/H (6% POSITIVE GRADIENT, 40% GOODS TRAFFIC) AND 500 VEH/H (6% NEGATIVE GRADIENT, 40% GOODS TRAFFIC) RESPECTIVELY. THIS INVESTIGATION SHOWS THE NEED FOR PROVIDING ADDITIONAL LANES ON GRADIENTS ON THE BASIS OF THE CRITERION "TRAFFIC CAPACITY". IT IS RECOMMENDED TO INCREASE THE GRADIENT OF ROADS WITH ONE-WAY TRAFFIC FROM 4 TO 5 OR 6%. ON SAFETY AND CAPACITY GROUNDS ADDITIONAL LANES ARE REQUIRED ALSO IN THE VALLEY ROADS. THE LIMITING GRADIENT FOR THE PROVISION OF ADDITIONAL LANES ON DOWNGRADES SHOULD NOT BE MORE THAN 1% HIGHER THAN ASCENDING GRADES.
