A METHOD IS SHOWN FOR FORECASTING SOIL STABILITY AS A BASIS FOR SELECTING THE TYPE OF CONSTRUCTION, FOR CALCULATING THE FINAL STABILITY AND FOR CALCULATING SETTLEMENTS AND THEIR TIME DEPENDENCE. FURTHER TECHNICAL SOLUTIONS FOR THE FOUNDING OF EARTHWORKS ARE PRESENTED: THE MOST EXTENSIVE SETTLEMENT-FREE POSSIBILITY OF CONSTRUCTING BRIDGES OVER MARSHLAND ON BOX PILES, EXCAVATION OF GROUND WITH THREE DIFFERENT METHODS OF GROUND WATER CONTROL, OVERFILLING AND HYDRAULIC JETTING. THE PREREQUISITES AND POSSIBILITIES OF USING THESE METHODS ARE INVESTIGATED IN DETAIL. THE PRECONSOLIDATION OF THE SUBSOIL BY OVERFILLING THE REQUIRED FILL LEVEL IS QUOTED AS BEING NORMALLY THE CHEAPEST METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION. THE NECESSARY PRECONDITIONS ARE A SOIL ANALYSIS, SETTLEMENT ANALYSIS, A LONG ENOUGH CONSTRUCTION PERIOD AND CONTROL MEASUREMENTS. THREE EXAMPLES OF THE USE OF THIS METHOD ARE GIVEN: THE FILLING OF AN EMBANKMENT TO A MARSH BRIDGE (SETTLEMENT MEASUREMENTS ARE GIVEN), THE CONSTRUCTION OF A 14 M HIGH MOTORWAY EMBANKMENT WITH GRAVITY RETAINING EMBANKMENTS AT THE FOOT OF THE EMBANKMENT, THE FILLING OF TWO EXPERIMENTAL EMBANKMENTS ON 30 M DEEP SOFT CLAY AND SANDY SILT. AS A LAST POSSIBILITY, METHODS FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF SOFT SUBSOIL ARE GIVEN: DYNAMIC CONSOLIDATION BY MEANS OF HEAVY DROP WEIGHTS, VIBROFLOTATION, THE INCLUSION OF SAND DRAINS OR OF DRAINS OF MAN-MADE MATERIAL, AND THE USE OF LIME PILES.
