A REPORT IS PRESENTED ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF CEMENT STABILISED ROADBASES IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF AIRCRAFT RUNWAYS ON SOILS OF A LOW BEARING CAPACITY IN SWITZERLAND. THE TRADITIONAL METHOD OF BUILDING UP LAYERS OF COHESIVE MATERIAL WHILST CONTROLLING THE FILTER CRITERIUM AGAINST MIXING WITH THE SUB-BASE IS UNECONOMICAL. FOR THIS REASON SANDWICH CONSTRUCTION HAS BEEN INTRODUCED, IN WHICH A CEMENT STABILISED LAYER IS USED AS A BASE FOR THE GRAVEL ROADBASE. AFTER EXTENSIVE TESTS IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF AIRCRAFT RUNWAYS, THIS METHOD HAS BECOME STANDARD IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION. THE GREAT ADVANTAGE WAS, ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING THE SCARCITY AND INCREASING COST OF HIGH GRADE GRAVEL, THAT THE REQUIRED QUALITY OF THE GRAVEL COULD BE REDUCED. THE SAME REASONS ALSO LEAD TO THE NEXT DEVELOPMENT, I.E. TO THE FULLY STABILISED BASE. THE ADVANTAGE WAS THE POSSIBILITY OF USING LOCALLY OCCURRING MATERIALS AND AT THE SAME TIME ITS SUPERIORITY OVER COMPARABLE TRADITIONAL GRAVEL CONSTRUCTION. THE POSSIBILITY OF FROST PROTECTION THROUGH THE USE OF EXPANDED POLYSTYRENE SHEETS IS POINTED OUT. IN CONCLUSION THE IMPORTANCE OF EVALUATING THE BITUMINOUS ROADBASES FROM A GEOMECHANICAL POINT OF VIEW IS EMPHASISED.
