RIGID PAVEMENT CONSTRUCTION YESTERDAY-TODAY-TOMORROW. ROAD CONSTRUCTION CONFERENCE 1975. 25 YEARS FGS, 17-19TH SEPTEMBER 1975

BETONSTRASSENBAU GESTERN - HEUTE - MORGEN STRASSENBAUTAGUNG 1975, 25 JAHRE FGS, 17-19 SEPTEMBER 1975

WHEN RIGID PAVEMENT CONSTRUCTION WAS FIRST ADOPTED IN AUSTRIA IN 1927 THERE WERE NO GENERAL GUIDELINES TO REFER TO, NEITHER WAS THERE ANY PLANT WHICH HAD BEEN PROVEN. THE FIRST COLLECTED EXPERIENCES WERE PUBLISHED IN 1932 IN "YEARBOOK FOR ROAD CONSTRUCTION", TOGETHER WITH RECOMMENDATIONS FOR CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES. FROM THIS THE "NOTES FOR THE CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE OF CONCRETE ROADS" WAS DEVELOPED, IN WHICH THE FIRST GUIDELINES ON MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION METHODS WERE CREATED. IN THE "GUIDELINES FOR THE PRODUCTION OF CONCRETE CARRIAGEWAY SLABS", FIRST PUBLISHED IN 1955, THE DESIRE TO CONSTRUCT SUCH SLABS IN ONE SECTION IN A COMPLETELY MECHANISED MANNER WAS FIRST CONSIDERED. IN ORDER TO ENSURE THAT CONCRETE SLABS ARE MORE COMPETITIVE IN THE FUTURE SOME OF THE PRESENT PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH THEM MUST BE REMOVED; FOR EXAMPLE THE RELATIVELY SLOW CONSTRUCTION PROGRESS, THE CONSTRUCTION OF CONCRETE CARRIAGEWAY SLABS ON BRIDGES, AND THE PROBLEMS IN THE REGION OF BRIDGE ABUTMENTS.
